Simon Bowen – Head Coach | Performance Director
Kingston, Jamaica → Wellington, New Zealand

Simon Bowen is the Head Coach and Performance Director of AIM – Athletes In Motion, bringing deep international high performance experience as a former professional athlete, elite coach, and an athletics media/performance analyst.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Simon Bowen is a George Mason University graduate (Fairfax, Virginia) and former nationally ranked Jamaican 800m specialist who competed internationally throughout the mid-1990s. A 4-time NCAA All-American and 2-time Penn Relays Champion (including a 1:47.77 anchor leg on the sprint medley), he is also part of a Jamaican national record-holding 2-mile relay team. Simon recorded personal bests of 1:46.38 (800m, 1993), 2:21.68 (1000m indoor, 1993) and 3:44.95 (1500m, 1995), and qualified for both the 1995 World Championships (Gothenburg) and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, competing in one of the most competitive eras of global middle-distance running.
Mentored by renowned coach John Cook, whose coaching legacy includes 1987 1500m World Champion Abdi Bile (3:30.55 PB) initiated an inherent basic philosophy and work ethic – a philosophy shaped by the principle that speed is the foundation of performance, whether expressed over 100 metres or 3000 metres. That speed-led approach, paired with evidence-based training and athlete-first load management, now underpins Simon’s coaching across the sprints (100 – 400m) and middle distance (800m – 3000m) through AIM (Athletes in Motion) in Wellington, New Zealand. Today, Simon works with youth, junior, and senior athletes preparing for local competitions, NZ Secondary School Championships, NZ Junior and Senior Championships, World Junior pathways, and US College scholarship opportunities.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Start by submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI). We’ll review your goals and readiness, then book a short conversation if there’s alignment.
Is AIM for my child — and what ages do you coach?
AIM supports athletes aged 12+, from emerging youth through elite junior and high-performance pathways.
Is AIM an athletics club — and can athletes still represent school/club?
AIM is not a club. Athletes still compete for their school and Athletics NZ–affiliated club (or overseas equivalent).
How are athletes selected for AIM programmes?
Selection is readiness-based, informed by regional/national rankings and an emerging athlete assessment. Placement reflects development stage, training history, goals, and commitment capacity.
What is your coaching philosophy?
AIM prioritises long-term athlete development—evidence-based training, technical excellence, intelligent load management, and athlete wellbeing. Our seasonal structure supports this, but the focus is building sustainable performance over time.
Do athletes stay registered with their school/club — and who enters competitions?
Yes. Athletes remain with their school and Athletics NZ–affiliated club (or overseas equivalent), and entries/uniforms are managed through those organisations. AIM focuses on training and performance preparation.
